Where to Stay in Hongdae: Areas, Hotels and Real Location Guide

Hongdae works best when the neighborhood itself is part of your trip, not just a place to sleep.

It is one of Seoul’s easiest areas for the all-stop AREX from Incheon Airport, and the streets around Hongik University stay active long after most sightseeing days are over. The trade-off is that “near Hongik University Station” does not always mean an easy walk with luggage, and a room close to the busiest streets can feel very different from one near Yeonnam or toward Hapjeong.

This guide starts with the map, then narrows the choice by the route you will actually use.

Where is Hongdae in Seoul?

Hongdae sits west of central Seoul, around Hongik University and Hongik University Station. That position explains two of its biggest strengths: Incheon Airport is on the same side of the city, and the all-stop AREX serves Hongik University Station directly.

The location also explains the trade-off. If most of your days are built around Gyeongbokgung, Jongno, Myeongdong or other central sights, you will travel east more often. That is not difficult, but it becomes part of the daily routine.

For a first-time visitor, the useful question is not simply whether Hongdae is “central.” It is whether you would rather have cafés, restaurants and late evenings close to your hotel, or shorten more of your daytime sightseeing trips.

Hongdae is not one single block

A hotel can be listed as “Hongdae” and still give you a very different stay depending on which side of the neighborhood it sits on.

Around Hongik University Station and the main shopping streets, you are closest to the busiest part of Hongdae. That is useful if you want to walk back after dinner, shopping or a late night, but street activity can continue well into the evening.

The Yeonnam side feels different. You are still close to Hongdae, but cafés, smaller streets and the Gyeongui Line Forest Park shape more of the immediate surroundings. It can be a better fit if you want Hongdae nearby without putting the busiest streets directly outside the hotel.

Toward Hapjeong and the quieter edges of Seogyo, the trade changes again. You give up some station immediacy, but larger rooms, apartment-style stays or a calmer night can become easier to find.

That is why we do not rank every Hongdae hotel by one distance number.

A short distance on the map can still feel long with luggage

Hongik University Station is large enough that the final part of the journey matters.

A hotel may look close to the station pin while the route from the AREX platform still includes long corridors, level changes, elevator waits, crossings and a final walk outside. With a backpack, that difference can feel minor. With two large suitcases after a long flight, it may be the part of the journey you remember most.

For that reason, Korea Inside looks at the route in the same order a traveler uses it: airport transport, station movement, exit, street crossing and hotel entrance.

The map is not here to prove that the closest hotel is always the best one. It is here to show what you are trading.

What it’s like to stay in Hongdae

The strongest reason to stay in Hongdae is what happens after the main sightseeing day is over.

You can come back to the neighborhood, eat late, stop at a café, browse shops or keep walking without planning another trip across Seoul. For travelers who already expect to spend several evenings here, that is a real convenience rather than a lifestyle slogan.

The same energy is also Hongdae’s obvious weakness. A hotel near busy nightlife streets can be a poor choice for a light sleeper even when the location looks perfect on paper. Moving a few blocks away can change the night without making the neighborhood inconvenient.

Hongdae is also not only for clubbing or travelers in their twenties. Couples, families and repeat visitors use the area for very different reasons. The question is how much of your own trip happens here, and which side of the neighborhood supports it.

Airport access is a real advantage — but the last walk still matters

One of Hongdae’s biggest practical advantages is that Incheon Airport has two straightforward ways into the neighborhood. The all-stop AREX serves Hongik University Station directly, and Airport Limousine Bus 6002 also stops in Hongdae.

That matters most when you are carrying luggage. AREX avoids a rail transfer, while the airport bus can be easier when its stop is close to your hotel and you would rather avoid moving through a large station.

If airport convenience is one of the main reasons you are choosing Hongdae, give extra weight to the hotels that reduce that final movement.

If you are staying farther toward Hapjeong or in an apartment-style property, the trade can still be worthwhile — especially for a group or a longer stay — but you should treat the last part of the journey as a separate decision.

The trade-off is daytime travel into central Seoul

Hongdae is well connected, but it is not beside Seoul’s main palace and central sightseeing cluster.

If your itinerary repeatedly returns to Gyeongbokgung, Jongno, Myeongdong and nearby central areas, those trips add up over several days. For many travelers the extra movement is completely reasonable because they value Hongdae more in the evening.

For a short first trip built almost entirely around central sightseeing, however, Myeongdong can still be the simpler base.

The point is not that one area is better. It is to avoid choosing Hongdae for its reputation and then spending most of the trip somewhere else.

If you are still deciding between the two areas, compare Hongdae and Myeongdong before choosing a hotel.

Hongdae signature stays

These are the stays to look at first when the hotel itself is part of why you chose Hongdae. Both keep the main streets close, but they offer a different kind of stay: L7 leans toward an easy, polished Hongdae base, while RYSE puts more weight on design and the room experience.

Korea Inside kept L7 HONGDAE on this list because it is one of the easiest all-round ways to stay in central Hongdae. The main streets, cafés and shopping are close, but the hotel still works for travelers who want a more polished stay than a basic room.

From Incheon Airport, take the all-stop AREX to Hongik University Station and continue to the hotel on foot. There is no rail transfer, which makes the arrival fairly simple even with luggage. Hongik University Station is also on Line 2, so trips toward Euljiro, Seongsu and the Gangnam side of Seoul are straightforward.

The trade-off is the same location that makes L7 convenient. You are close to one of Hongdae’s busiest areas, so travelers who care more about a very quiet night may prefer a stay farther toward Yeonnam or a quieter edge of the neighborhood.

RYSE made the Korea Inside list because it gives Hongdae a genuinely different option: the hotel itself matters almost as much as the location. It is a better fit for couples and travelers who care about design, rooms and the overall stay rather than using the hotel only as a place to sleep.

From Incheon Airport, the simplest rail route is the all-stop AREX to Hongik University Station, followed by the final walk to the hotel. RYSE also has access to the Hongdae airport-limousine route, so travelers with heavier luggage may have more than one practical way to arrive. Once in Seoul, Hongik University Station gives you Line 2 for everyday travel around the city.

The compromise is price, and you are still staying in the active center of Hongdae. If a quieter night matters more than design or immediate nightlife access, one of the stays farther from the busiest streets may suit the trip better.

The station itself is still large, so direct rail should not be confused with zero walking. There is still an internal journey before reaching the hotel.
